Chapter Thirteen
Shock kept Liam rooted in place, but Aiden’s burst of laughter fractured the silence that had descended on the room.
“A sister?” he repeated. “I think we would have noticed one of those hanging around the house.”
Brendan didn’t join in, which made Aiden’s reaction all the more jarring.
“Mom hid the pregnancy from us. She didn’t want Dad to know because—” a muscle ticked in his jaw “—well, the baby might not have been his. It was after she’d filed for divorce.”
Liam finally found his voice. “Mom told you that?”
“She didn’t tell me anything. The only reason I found out about the baby was because I overheard her talking to a woman from the adoption agency. I’d skipped school and was keeping a low profile in our room so Mom didn’t know I was there.”
“How could she keep something like that a secret?” Aiden’s voice thinned, a sign he was struggling for control. “Women gain weight when they’re pregnant, right? I think we would have noticed.”
Liam wasn’t so sure. Their mom had never cared much about her appearance. Her wardrobe consisted of oversize T-shirts and sweatpants from the neighborhood thrift store. Clothing that would have made it easy to conceal a pregnancy from her sons.
“It wouldn’t be as difficult as you might think.” Lily spoke Liam’s thoughts out loud. “Especially if your mom knew she wasn’t planning to keep the baby.”
Fragments of memories continued to piece themselves together in Liam’s mind. His mom napping a lot. Yelling at them to be quiet because she didn’t feel well. Carla was an alcoholic, though, so it wasn’t as if that kind of behavior was out of character.
Sunni joined the conversation for the first time. “When Brendan asked if you could keep your last name while I was pursuing the adoption, I didn’t question it. I assumed it was important to you boys to keep that small connection to your family.”
Family? Liam hadn’t known what the word meant until God had brought Sunni and Rich Mason into their lives.
Darren Kane had wandered in and out of their lives for years. No one knew how long he would stick around. Sometimes it was a few months, other times a few days. When he and Carla finally split up for good, Liam’s mom had remarried and things had continued to go downhill from there.
The first few times Liam been placed in emergency foster care, Aiden and Brendan had been with him. But as they got older, it became more difficult to find someone willing to take in three boys who were already beginning to exhibit signs of the emotional wear and tear from growing up in such an unstable environment.
“You’re our family.” Liam reached for Sunni’s hand and gave it a squeeze.
“Do you know where she is now?” Aiden rose to his feet. “Did she contact you?”
“No.”
It wasn’t the answer Aiden wanted to hear. “Well, what about the couple that adopted her? Do you know anything about them?”
Brendan shook his head. “It was a closed adoption.
